There is no doubt Iowa struggled this year but they have made some positive changes. Fans have a lot to be excited for as they have already secured Cade McNamara at quarterback and his teammate Erick All at tight end. Positive changes have happened but there has also been some negative. This article should highlight the major changes on the team and help set reasonable expectations for the Hawks.
Transferring In:
Cade McNamara has to be the first name reported as he will have the biggest impact on next years team. In his first starting season Cade led the Wolverines to a win over the team rival Ohio State Buckeyes. He also led the team to the college football playoffs. Expectations for Cade are high as he has a 65% completion and was competant enough to lead the Wolverines to a lossless regular season. Good quarterback play is necessary for success in college football and Cade seems to bring that.
Erick All is McNamara's former teammate and was the teams second best reciever in 2021. In October 2022 Erick was reported inactive as he went into a life changing surgery. Though Ericks 2022 season ended in dissapointment he still has lots of potential and should have a huge impact on this struggling Iowa offense.
Transferring Out
Although wide recievers were unusually ineffective Arland Bruce will be missed. He was the teams second leading wide reciever though he only had 19 catches and 187 yards. Part of that issue was the lack of subsequent quarterback play. Arland is now committed to the most devasted reviever room in the country, Oklahoma State. Arland's skills are likely to be inflated as he is likely to be the number one reciever in that locker room.
Gavin Williams entered the portal on December 5th then committed to Northern Illinois on the 31st. Though Williams hadn't exercised his full potential he will be missed. A teams running game is deadly when you can always have a rested body. Iowa shouldn't worry too much though as they still have a Freshman Kaleb Johnson and Sophomore Leshon Williams to lead the rush game in the future.
Arguably Iowa's biggest loss is Keagan Johnson. To start the season Keagan was predicted to be the teams #1 receiver but that idea was quickly shut down as he suffered multiple soft tissue injuries. He has committed to the Kansas State Wildcats. Keagan played in only one game and only recorded two receptions for eleven yards. Though he was unable to produce this year I expect similar results to Charlie Jones from 2021. Kansas State has lost their #1 receiver and Keagan looks to fill that gap.
Overall the Hawks seem to have lost some serious talent, but they also have filled the deepest holes in their offense. Cade McNamara has big potential and already has a good target in his former team Erick All. Fans should have positive expectations on the coming season.
